Your List For Beginner Crochet Projects

0

When I started to crochet a few months ago  I was looking for easy beginner crochet projects so I can improve my crochet skills, build beautiful things and enjoy the process of crocheting itself.  So, I will share with you here some of the projects that I tried in person in addition to some that I didn’t try but would like to try them as soon as I have time.

I will also try to put a YouTube video tutorial with every project in addition to the suggested yarn for each project. The main skill required for those projects is the double crochet stitch (US terms) that is the treble crochet stitch in UK. If you are not yet comfortable with the double crochet stitch don’t worry as soon as you start crocheting you will master it.

Each project may have a small challenge that will help you improve your crochet skills. Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself and embrace failure. I did – and still do – some projects that are so embarrassing to share but take it is easy, enjoy the journey and remember that mistakes are wonderful opportunities to learn 🙂

Please note that I picked those projects in a way to offer beginner crocheters a nice variety of easy projects. Also my advice to you is instead of just buying yarn at random is to pick the projects you like and write down the yarn needed for those projects and buy them.

1. The Granny Square Blanket

The granny square blanket is the best teacher for the double crochet stitch. Actually working on granny squares was the best thing that helped me master the double crochet stitch and improve my crochet skills. Please begin with a granny square blanket/throw for your first crochet project as it will improve your crochet skills and you will be crocheting something that you can actually use for yourself.

I found this nice video tutorial which explains how to make a granny square blanket for beginners.

The Supplies List For Granny Square Blanket (Affiliate Links):

  • 3 Balls of Caron One Pound Yarn & J/10 (6 mm) crochet hook.

Please note that there are 2 ways to make a granny square blanket one is like the video tutorial above which is by making one large granny square consisting of many many rounds and the other is as the picture below by making many small granny squares and sewing them together. Sewing granny squares together is very simple for beginners so don’t worry 🙂

2. Coasters And Face Scrubbies

Crochet Costers – My Work

Crochet Coasters and face scrubbies have plenty of common. Both should be made of cotton and both are round but face scrubbies maybe a little smaller than coasters or you can make them as big as you wish! The best thing about coasters and face scrubbies are that they they are fast, easy to make and make nice gifts. Here’s a very nice video tutorial to make coasters that I personally used:

I used Sugar N Cream Cotton Yarn and a G-6 (4 mm) hook:

But the yarn used in the video tutorial above is Stylecraft special DK (acrylic not recommended for coasters):

3. V-Scarf And Scarves

This was my first crochet scarf and I really like it.  But since I live in a hot country with almost no winter so we don’t really need any scarves 🙂 I made it to practice crocheting and because it looks very nice and cute. You can find the video tutorial for it here. I used less than one skein of Patons Beehive Baby Sport Yarn Ccolor Rose Bud (Affiliate Link).

4. Beanies

As I said I live in a hot country so we don’t use beanies either! I made cotton beanies for my kids to wear after finishing their swimming class because their hair is wet and they get into the car with the AC on. If you are going to follow a video tutorial it is preferable you stick to the yarns they use or yarns that are same size to the ones used unless you are aware of the effect of using different yarn sizes. I used those tutorials to make my beanies. I like that this lady made a separate video tutorial for each size:

Crochet a Simple Beanie for Ladies – Mens Size

Crochet a Simple Beanie for Teens – Small Ladies Size

Crochet a Simple Beanie for 3 years – pre-teens

Crochet a Simple Toddler Beanie for 12 months – 3 years

Crochet a Simple Baby Beanie for 6-12 months

Crochet a Simple Baby Beanie for 0-6 months

5. Bookmarks

Crochet bookmarks come in different shapes. You can make them in single crochet rectangles or a flower and a chain or a set of flowers and attach fringes at the end. You can use almost any yarn but the bigger the yarn size the bigger your bookmarks will be. I tried sport weight yarn and a 3 mm hook and the result was cute. Here is the tutorial I used:

Supplies For Daisy Bookmark (Affiliate Links):

Sylecraft special DK yarn and a G-6 (4 mm) crochet hook.

6. Coffee Mug Cozy:

This is one project I didn’t try and I don’t intend to. Personally I don’t find Coffee Mug Cozy useful for me but many people do and I like to crochet things that I will actually use. It’s a good project to practice crocheting and I think it’s a good idea if you are going to give a mug as a gift to someone to have it presented with a crochet Coffee Mug Cozy. Here’s a video tutorial for beginners coffee mug cozy:

Supplies For Crochet Coffee Mug Cozy(Affiliate):

H (5 mm) Size Crochet Hook, Redheart Polyester OR Peach & Ceam Cotton Yarn.

7. Ear Warmers:

Simple, easy and practical. If you have girls they will like it. This project is on my to-do list. You can try this tutorial here.

8. Mini Baby Dress:

These are so cute and adorable. If you know basic skills how to crochet in the round definitely give this project a go. You can make plenty of them, attach key chains to them and sell them as baby shower favors. Personally I used a sport weight yarn and a 3mm hook (almost size D in US because D is 3.25 mm). This is the video tutorial I used:

Supplies for Crochet Mini Dress:

I used a sport weight or DK weight yarn and a 3 mm hook.

9. Dishcloth

If you are still practicing single, half double, double and treble crochet stitches then dishcloth are – along coasters – dishcloth are an excellent exercise for you. For example, you can make a simple square and after you finish you can make a border to make look even better. You can find plenty of video tutorials here.

10. Sunglasses Case

Personally I think this is a super cute project! In addition to practicing your crochet stitches, you will also learn how to sew two crochet parts together. You can find a nice tutorial for crocheting sunglasses case here.

11. Crochet Bunting

I like the idea of handmade ornaments and decorations. I am planning to do some and keep them for any upcoming celebrations. Here’s an easy tutorial for beginners to make a crochet star ornament:

12. Cocoon Cardigan:

Beginner Crochet Projects – Cocoon Cardigan

My second successful crochet project was this beautiful cocoon cardigan. I used Caron One Pound yarn. If you can do a granny square then you can do this cardigan because it is just a big granny square with ends sewn together and a border so I can safely say that the only challenge in this project was the border but overall I was satisfied with the results (the picture above is my work). You can find a video tutorial for the cardigan here.

Supplies For Crochet Cocoon Cardigan:

I used Caron One Pound Yarn (color of your choice) and a H-8 (5 mm) hook.

There are definitely more beginner projects out there I will keep adding and updating this post with projects as I try them. Hope you like this post and more to come soon. Please feel free to share ideas or recommendations for beginner crochet projects you tried yourself in the comments section of this post. Thanks…
