Beginner Crochet Stitches – How To Crochet

0

So you want to learn to crochet? cool! Just a few months ago – September 2016 to be specific –  I was like you and now I can crochet many many things and read patterns. Crochet is very easy if you know what you are doing and if you practice. I decided to write down a mini curriculum for beginner crochet stitches let’s call it Crochet 101. So you if go through all the 7 lessons of Crochet 101 you will be ready to do many beautiful projects and you will be able to go out there and learn even more advanced crochet stitches on your own.

Go to crochet yarn for beginners if you need help in deciding what yarn you should buy.

A last note before you start crochet 101. I have to be honest that I didn’t learn to crochet from watching random Youtube videos because honestly there are just way too many and I didn’t know where to start. I came across craftsy courses (affiliate link) a few months before and I found that they have – along other crafts – crochet courses. I joined Crochet: Basics & Beyond (affiliate link) by Kim Werker. I was very skeptical if I can learn to crochet just by watching videos but since the course was on sale ($19.99 instead of 39.99)  I said to myself why not give it a try. The course was very nice and their mobile app is awesome too. The instructor goes slowly and is very clear. Also you can ask the instructor questions and see others’ questions. I will be posting a review on craftsy courses with more details soon (UPDATE: Craftsy Classes Review is now available).

Nevertheless I will provide you here with a simple curriculum/guide to help you learn all the crochet stitches you need to start building awesome crochet projects. If you follow through the 7 lessons below you will be able to do things like blankets, bookmarks, tops, slippers and many many things more… good luck!

Beginner Crochet Stitches – Crochet 101

Beginner Crochet Stitches – Lesson 1: Introduction

How to hold the crochet hook and yarn: this is a very good tutorial that goes slowly and clearly. Always remember you can hold your yarn in many ways, find the way that is easy for you but the way in this tutorial is the way I personally use. It will be hard in the beginning but as you practice more and more things will get easy for you.

How to make a slip knot: This is basically a knot you need to make on your hook to be able to start crocheting.

Beginner Crochet Stitches – Lesson 2: The Single Crochet Stitch +Project

Now this is one of the most important things you’ll learn and starting from this lesson on each lesson (or crochet stitch) you master will help you master the stitches in the next lessons. You don’t have to be perfect to move to the next lesson, you just need to try the stitch and practice a little and then move ahead to the next stitch and once you finish crochet 101 and start doing real projects your stitches will improve. Also, if you feel the instructions in the videos are not clear you can search for  other video tutorials other than the videos I provide here.  As I said this is like a curriculum for you so definitely you can do your outside research and still follow through with the plan here. Also, feel free to leave your comments and questions below.

How to make the single crochet stitch and a single crochet dishcloth:

Please note that since you are practicing you don’t need to buy the same yarn/hook in the video tutorial. It is highly recommended that dishcloth is made in cotton yarn nevertheless if you have any other type of yarn and the recommended hook size for it then you can follow through with the video.

Beginner Crochet Stitches – Lesson 3: The Half Double Crochet Stitch

Beginner Crochet Stitches – Lesson 4: The Double Crochet Stitch

This is one of the most important stitches in crochet. It is very commonly used and it is part of many great patterns like the famous vintage granny square. I just love it. It was a little challenging in the beginning but with practice I improved. I actually made a granny square throw for practicing this stitch and this what helped me a great deal. The abbreviation for the double crochet is (dc) and it is twice as long as the single crochet.

Beginner Crochet Stitches – Lesson 5: The Treble Crochet Stitch

Now this stitch is a little bit challenging for the absolute beginner so don’t stop here much because when you master the previous stitches (single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet) you will find the treble crochet easier. So what I recommend is that you watch the video, try the treble crochet for couple of rows and your done. The treble crochet stitch is abbreviated as (tr).

Beginner Crochet Stitches – Lesson 7: Crochet In The Round

There is a simple formula for crocheting a flat circle: increase by 12 stitches every row.

Here’s a list of tutorials for beginner crochet projects that you can start on right away. Hope you the best in your journey and good luck a whole new world of patterns and projects is waiting for you!
