Beginner Shell Stitch Baby Blanket

0

I was browsing the internet to learn the crochet shell stitch since I was told it is very easy and that a shell stitch baby blanket would work out very quickly. The shell stitch is very beautiful and simple but there are many variations out there and it depends mainly on the pattern you are using and what you are using the shell stitch for making. It is important for you to know that some shell stitches are made using half double or treble crochet but it is more commonly made with a double crochet stitch.

I ended up with this cute and beautiful shell stitch baby blanket above. I used Caron simply soft yarn one skein of each of the following colors: GrapeLimelightBerry BlueWatermelonMangoBlue Mint, and Super Duper Yellow and a size H (5mm) hook.

***You can also buy the yarn from Walmart here: Walmart Caron simply soft.***

As mentioned earlier, the shell stitch has many variations some are solid (with less gaps) while others are lacier. This tutorial is about one of the variations of the solid shell stitch that you can use to make cute blankets and other projects of your choice.

So, let’s get to work!

First thing you need to learn is how to crochet a shell stitch (this is a 5 double crochet shell stitch):

Shell Stitch Steps:

  1. Make a single crochet stitch.
  2. Skip 2 chains.
  3. Make 5 double crochet stitches in the next stitch.
  4. Skip 2 chains.
  5. Repeat the above steps again!

Shell Stitch Baby Blanket Border:

Less is more! If you’ve seen the last part of the video above you can see how cute the border is for this blanket while it is just made of simple 4 single crochet rows from the colors Grape, Watermelon, Mange and Super Duper Yellow consecutively. The only trick in the single crochet border is that at the corners you make 3 single crochet stitches in the same stitch. I had to make some decreases here and there to end up with the same number of single crochet stitches on opposite sides.

Happy Crochetin!
